U Student Wins AICHE Poster Competition
University of Utah chemical engineering student, JoCee Porter, was awarded first place in the Undergraduate Student Poster Competition during the Annual National Student Council for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE). The AICHE conference was held in early November in Salt Lake City. In the Undergraduate Student Poster Competition, students are given the opportunity to create a poster presenting their research. Porter won in the category “Computing, Simulations, and Process Control.”
Porter presented her research on neutron activation analysis and a Python-based Neutron Interaction Calculator, called PyNIC. PyNIC is a new tool used to predict and pre-calculate the energy rate and dose rate for a sample undergoing neutron activation analysis. Her work is supported by the Utah Nuclear Engineering Program. Porter is a sophomore who also is minoring in nuclear engineering and conducting research under U nuclear engineering director, Tatjana Jevremovic.
There were over 300 students from around the country competing in eight different categories in the poster competition. The contest consisted of each student’s poster and research being evaluated by three judges.
