The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Utah is proud to announce that Assistant Professor (Lecturer) Anthony Butterfield (Tony) has been awarded the 2013 Outstanding Teacher Award by the College of Engineering at the University of Utah. Tony has taught the senior projects laboratory courses over the last few years. He has helped develop a highly successful new freshman design laboratory course.
Tony’s teaching excellence is reflected in his high teaching evaluations. He has been in the top 15% of college evaluations in every semester that he has taught. Student comments corroborate these high numerical ratings. Typical comments taken from his spring 2013 evaluations highlight Tony’s special qualities.
- Energy/Enthusiasm coupled with organization makes Dr. Butterfield one of the best professors available.
- Dr. Butterfield is one of the hardest working professors I know. Sometimes I think he works too hard, and should really take a break.
- Always available inside and outside of the lab. Never hesitated to drop what he was doing to help.
Tony enthusiastically took up the development of the department’s new freshman course, CH EN 1705, Design and Innovation in Chemical Engineering. This course was added to the curriculum to introduce hands-on learning early in the curriculum. The course was a great success based on evaluations and student comments.
Over the past two years, Tony has shepherded our outreach program for high school students to a position of prominence in the College. He has carefully guided small groups of undergraduates as they have developed hands-on projects and demonstrations for use in high schools throughout the State. These outreach efforts have helped disseminate understanding of our discipline to high school students and the public at large, and have helped fuel growth in our undergraduate student population.
We would like to thank Tony for his many valuable contributions to the department and congratulate him on a well-deserved teaching excellence award.
