Safety Precautions
- Take care to follow the order described below for start-up and shut down. Equipment damage or personal injury may result.
- Use caution when using any steam device. Surface temperatures of the steam chamber, cooling rods, steam valves, lines and fittings are high enough to cause burns.
Start-up
- Open the steam inlet and outlet valves to allow steam flow through the chamber. Wait until the temperature readings attain steady state conditions.
- Record the ambient temperature near the heat conduction apparatus.
- Record all ten thermocouple readings from the rod(s) used in the experiment. Ensure repeatability by taking a second set of temperature readings.
- Wait a predetermined time period (about 10 minutes), and take an addition set of readings to confirm the steady state condition. Confirm repeatability.
Shut Down
- Turn off the steam inlet valve.
- Turn off the steam outlet valve.
- Do not touch the apparatus until it has cooled sufficiently.
